About the Position
Performs direct patient care activities under the direction of the Physician, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse or designee practicing according to national standards, and insuring work performed meets regulatory requirements.

Position Requirements

6. Incorporate knowledge from chapter 71.05 RCW and chapter 388-865, 246-322 and 246.337 WAC into practice.
7. Reports to work on time as scheduled.
8. Attends meetings and in-services as scheduled.
9. Follows nursing standards, procedures, protocols, and treatment orders.
10. Makes basic observations, gathers data and assists in identification of needs and problems relevant to the patient, collects specific data as directed and communicated outcomes of the data collection process in a timely fashion to the RN.

11. Administers medications and documents patient’s response following nursing procedures. Informs the RN and prescriber of medication or treatment refusals.
12. Knowledgeable of the medications actions, special nursing considerations, safe dose ranges, purpose of administration, and adverse effects of the medications to be administered.
13. Completes medical treatments and/or orders (i.e. immunizations, EKG, TB testing, etc.)

14. Receive report and asks pertinent questions.
15. Completes and documents medication teaching for patients and their significant others during hospitalization and prior to discharge.

16. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, assesses data reflective of the patient’s status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and provides care as needed.

17. Completes the patient transfer process, also under the supervision of an RN.
18. Addresses risk issues promptly and appropriately (i.e., reportable incidents such as assaults, accident, and debriefing).
19. Informs charge nurse of: acute patient care situations (i.e. assault, suicidal ideation, and/or attempts, falls), patient’s progress or lack of progress, and any safety/environmental issues (i.e., security, physical hazards).
20. Cares for patients with communicable diseases following applicable nursing/infection control procedures.
21. Utilizes management of assaultive behavior techniques/principles when intervening with a potentially aggressive/assaultive patient.
22. Completes documentation as per policies and procedures.
23. Able to operate oxygen and suction machine.
24. Performs venipuncture for blood draws.

25. Follows organization infection control policies and procedures. At risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens.
26. Recognizes own stress and the impact on others, identify and manage stressors utilizing the guidance of others
27. Identifies how own job performance contributes to the fulfillment of the Navos mission statement, philosophy, values and goals.
28. Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • One year of experience in psychiatric nursing preferred.
  • Two years of experience in an inpatient setting required.
  • Professional interest and commitment to working with the mentally ill and in the development of care systems for the mentally ill.
  • Demonstrated understanding of psychiatric illness and its treatment, knowledge of psychotropic medications and knowledge of the laws and regulations governing the delivery of mental health services in the State of Washington preferred.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting, according respect to others based on knowledge and experience, as well as discipline.
  • Ability to tolerate the stress of an inpatient psychiatric care setting.
  • Ability to interact with consumers with sensitivity, tact and respect; as well as firmness, when necessary.
  • Knowledge of theories of human behavior, personality development and psychological and physical cause of mental disorders.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of group and individual therapy; understanding of principles and methods of intervention.
  • Familiarity with Washington Administrative Code regulations and professional standards governing the treatment of the mentally ill.


Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations

  • Current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Washington.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • National Provider Identifier.
Computer Skills

  • Demonstrated competence in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Epic experience preferred.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee may involve lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, and stooping requiring upper and lower body strength. Lifting up to 50 lbs. may be required without assistance.
