Job Description

In collaboration with the Associate Dean, the Academic Department Chair (Chair) ensures the integrity, excellence, national reputation, and continuous improvement of the Nurse Practitioner program through leadership, influence, innovation, partnerships, and the advancement of the discipline. The chair will provide program-level leadership by supervising full- and part-time faculty in teaching their courses, being responsive to students, and ensuring their involvement in providing course feedback and participation in professional development activities. The Chair will have in-depth knowledge of the organization’s goals, will remain current in their respective discipline, and will be responsible for student success and all associated program performance outcomes. The Chair is also expected to ensure the currency, relevance, and appropriateness of the curriculum and work with course leaders, Associate Dean and the Assistant Dean of Curriculum in the development and maintenance of courses within the program.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Supervises full and part-time faculty including interviewing, hiring, and training; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Assists the Associate Dean with the scheduling of classes and assignments of faculty to the schedule.
  • Review faculty performance to ensure the maintenance of the classroom standards.
  • Takes a lead role in assigned course curriculum oversight in conjunction with course leaders, Associate Dean and the Assistant Dean of Curriculum. Creates, measures, and communicates program outcomes and other relevant program information to Nursing leadership.
  • Makes recommendations to the Associate Dean as appropriate related to hiring, evaluation, and retention of faculty in assigned courses. Metrics include the percentage of faculty with terminal degrees, student end of term survey results, and GPA distribution in sections and courses.
  • Works with the Associate Dean to help establish operational and performance objectives and to positively impact student outcomes, program quality, and enrollment growth within the program. Contributes to the overall success of the University as a whole.
  • Participates in student retention activities and provides a beginning point of contact for faculty with student escalation issues.
  • Provides a meaningful learning experience for each student in every course.
  • Assists the Associate Dean in supervising other Chairs as a Lead Chair, if needed.
  • Performs other administrative and job-related duties as assigned.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the University as a whole. Assessment will include positive working relationships with peers and external departments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution and an active Nurse Practitioner certification in their area of specialization
  • 3-5 years’ experience in post-secondary education with experience in leading online nurse practitioner programs
  • Leadership experience preferred in higher education managing Nurse Practitioner Programs
  • Certification as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) to be obtained within 12 months of hire.
  • Exceptional computer skills using Microsoft Office applications and adobe connect meeting technology. Familiarity with Google is a plus.

  • Must have a working knowledge of accreditation and regulatory standards in higher education. Working knowledge of program performance metrics and be skillful in pedagogical interventions and faculty development. Excellent communication, organizational and time-management skills, and ability to work independently in a virtual environment with minimal supervision
  • Ability to collaborate with and work across departments. Philosophical commitment to the program and the development of faculty and students.
  • Must have an active and unencumbered license.
  • 20% Travel may be required
