Peer Counselor – American Behavioral Health Systems – Spokane Valley, WA

American Behavioral Health Systems (ABHS) is seeking a Peer Support Specialist to work at our Mission treatment facility in Spokane Valley, WA.

The Peer Support Specialist will help clients identify and work toward wellness goals while encouraging individuals to take personal responsibility for their recovery and wellness. Qualified candidates will have knowledge of the recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes.

Scope of Work:

  • Provide peer interventions to clients regarding, but not limited to, symptoms of mental illness, coping skills, medications/side effects, and relapse prevention.
  • Assist clients in connecting to community resources.
  • Share relevant parts of personal recovery story (role modeling) to support clients in engagement and help connect them to necessary services.
  • Assist in improving the community adjustment of clients at high risk for institutionalization, to reduce the need for repeated and extended inpatient treatment.
  • Document services provided and maintain clinical records in accordance with policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Degree in human services or a related field, OR at least two years of paid or volunteer work experience with adults with addiction and/or mental illness.
  • Agency Affiliated Counselor License, or the ability to obtain one.
  • Completed Peer Certification Training, provided before interview appointment.
  • Must be current or past consumer of mental health / co-occurring behavioral treatment with 2 – 3 years success within personal recovery.
  • Must have knowledge of the signs and symptoms of mental illness and the ability to assist the client to address symptoms using strategies such as self-talk.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
  • The peer specialist who is or has been a recipient of mental health or addiction services should have self-knowledge to manage their illness and be well along in their recovery.
