VMWare Engineer – Lancaster General Hospital – Lancaster, PA

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Technology and Operations Director – Information Services, and according to established policies and procedures, the VMware Engineer leads the implementation of the integration of systems and networks and/or supports current systems and network services in a timely, cost effective and efficient manner. Develops and maintains a strong working relationship with customers and project team members; provide enhancements and maintenance support for existing systems and network services.

The VMware Engineer engages with peer technology team-members as well as Desktop, Helpdesk, Common Application Delivery teams in supporting network and system strategies and services. They will recognize and support an ‘always on’, 24×7, systems services model as necessary.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • Implements VMWare/Hyper-V/Virtualization concepts and best practices.
  • Provides VMware Systems and Storage solution guidance to appropriate parties.
  • Designs, implements and maintains VMware server solutions including the VDI backend server environment.
  • Conducts setup and configuration of custom VMware system solutions.
  • Performs VMware Sustain Engineering including the VDI backend server environment (Hypervisor patches, upgrades).
  • Performs Microsoft Systems Sustain Engineering (Microsoft OS patches, upgrades).
  • Performs UNIX System Sustain Engineering (OS patches, upgrades).
  • Performs Physical to Virtual, and Virtual to Virtual migrations.
  • Provides Cisco UCS Engineering support to appropriate parties.
  • As new projects or upgrades occur, completes fulfillment of servers (Microsoft, Virtual or UNIX) and integration into the network.
  • As servers are virtualized or decommissioned, will be responsible for handling the reclamation or rightsizing of the server.
  • Performs VMware Server Problem Resolution and troubleshooting.
  • Conducts VMware System and Storage utilization and allocation reporting.
  • Forecasts VMware Server Services and Storage Service requirements (Capacity and Availability Management).
  • Implements and maintains Data Protection (Backup & Restore environment) for VMware environment.
  • Establishes VMware Disaster Recovery Planning with customers.
  • Conducts testing of VMware Disaster Recovery Plans and documents results appropriately.
  • Provides advice, training, and 24×7 technical support and participates in an on-call rotation.
  • Implements and maintains information system solutions for the Healthcare environment.


  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field OR High School Diploma or GED with three (3) years progressive relevant experience is required.
  • One of the following certifications are required within one (1) year of hire:
    • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MSCE) certification
    • Cisco Data Center (UCS),
    • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
    • EMCIE certification
  • Additional certifications, as indicated by leadership, may be required to support the needs of the business.
  • Three (3) years demonstrated experience successfully delivering Information Technologies Network services and solutions for Clinical and Business applications in a Healthcare environment across multiple hardware and software platforms with demonstrated competency in service delivery and solution execution in support of new healthcare projects and in a regulated environment.
  • Three (3) years demonstrated experience delivering on multiple, simultaneous projects in an open-systems environment. Monitor vendor performance to ensure compliance with committed delivery.
  • Experience in developing and supporting a team atmosphere and knowledge-share.
  • A health care provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs, i.e. not excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid or any other federal or state health insurance program.


  • Four (4) years of demonstrated experience delivering clinical and financial network system support with emphasis in Healthcare.
  • Experience in IT System Information Life Cycles requiring highly regulated health authority standards.
  • Demonstrated experience in vendor negotiations.
  • Demonstrated experience working with key industry IT standards bodies/forums in driving standards and interoperability.
  • Experience in Information Technology infrastructure delivery and support in medium to large Healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge of Converged Systems, CISCO and EMC products and Microsoft server and network services. Detailed knowledge of network and system hardware, network switching, network routing, performance and system/network services tools.
  • Detailed knowledge of UNIX and Microsoft operating systems and deep knowledge in one or more of the following Microsoft product verticals (Exchange services, SQL services, SharePoint services, Active Directory services)
  • Strong organizational and planning skills using Microsoft Project and Microsoft Visio. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal relations skills. Knowledge of current healthcare and industry trends.
