OCCUP HEALTH NURSE

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college, university or nursing school as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) and responsible professional nursing experience, preferably in Occupational health or hospital nursing environment. Related administrative or research experience is also required.

Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.

License:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, D.C. Nursing License (and others as may be required in the future).

Medical Group:

Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position.  Must be able to perform the essential functions of this job either with or without reasonable accommodation(s).

Job Summary/Duties:

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) Occupational Health and Wellness Department is seeking a Licensed Registered Nurse for managing departmental deliverables, to include hearing conservation, absence management, and the respiratory protection program. This role is a critical part of daily operations, to include, assisting with medical examinations, overall patient care and services, and adherence to OHAW compliances.  Successful candidates will have exceptional nursing and management skills, and the ability to manage multiple medical projects simultaneously, and exercise independent judgment and action. 

COHN Certification, Masters’ Degree in Health Care Administration, and proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) Systems is preferred.

This is professional occupational health nursing and medical support work. Employee in this job is responsible for administering limited emergency medical consultation to individuals with illness and injuries which occur at work and for developing, assisting, and planning health care programs. Employee has the latitude for independent judgment and actions within established guidelines. Employee is supervised by the Medical Director who reviews work from status of actions, timeliness and quality of work.

Develops, maintains, and administers standard operating procedures for Health Unit.

Administers basic emergency consultation for illnesses of occupational and non-occupational origin and injuries that occur at OCCB and other Authority locations. Assesses situation and refers patient to appropriate medical personnel.

Assists in the conduct of medical examinations including taking partial or complete medical histories, checking vital signs such as pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height, weight, etc.

May test vision, hearing or give injections/draw blood as instructed by the Medical Director.

Determines whether health/emergency problem requires that the individual be referred to a physician or hospital; administers medications and treatments authorized by physicians with the Medical Director’s approval.

Advises employee to obtain medical care and makes referral to private physicians, dentists, clinics or community resources, depending on the apparent nature and origin of the employee’s problem.

Performs research and statistical analyses and prepares periodic or other reports in support of the health unit as required. Ensures medical case documentation is appropriate and compatible among user offices; maintains confidentiality on records/information specific to sensitive medical/health work performance issues for management and contract employees. Spends time at the Bladensburg medical facility and other locations as necessary.

Prepares and presents oral and written reports, studies, and recommendations within areas of assigned responsibility as may be appropriate; attends and participates in organizational meetings.

Develops and prepares monthly statistical activity reports for the Health Unit.

Responsible for administering and maintaining Authority Wellness Programs.

Counsels employees and develops educational programs on varied health subjects which may include nutrition, dental and safety regimen, care of minor injuries and illnesses, family and health problems, home care of communicable diseases, etc.

Works closely with the SARM in planning and implementing medical examinations as may be required by OSHA.

Develops and maintains liaison with Authority officials, other transit properties, medical personnel and others with whom interface may be required.

Assists in planning, administering and coordinating blood donor drives, blood pressure checks, immunization, periodic medical examination and other health related activities as assigned; administers MMPI psychological profile test.

Performs related duties as required.
