Job Title: Athletic Head Coach
Reports to: Building Athletic Director
Salary: DEA Master Agreement Supplemental Schedule

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the building athletic director/principal, an athletic head coach instructs and works with athletes to prepare them for competition. Coaches help athletes to play their best individually and as a team in sports such as football, baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball, wresting, tennis, cross country, swimming, track and golf. Coaches are experts on the rules, strategies, and techniques of their sports. Coach must also know about sports equipment, physical fitness, safety as well as the related eligibility and compliance guidelines for DPS and the Ohio High School Athletics Association.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBITIES (May not include all duties performed)

  • Organization and Communication
    • Communicate information regarding expectation, practices, competitions and other events with parents, players and administration in a timely manner
    • Conduct orientation programs for parents, athletes and assistant coaches
    • Work with the building athletic director to develop non-league schedule and confirm league schedule
    • Develop procedures and establish open communication with parents and athletes to address any issues or concerns related to the team
  • Administrative
    • Manage the ordering, inventory, repairing, and cleaning of all sport specific equipment
    • Work with the building athletic director to secure officials for non-league home games
    • Work with the building athletic director in making arrangement for transportation to away games
    • Implement and follow Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA), district, state and school athletic codes, rules and philosophies
    • Ensure completion of yearly physical exam and existence of insurance by and for each athlete
    • Work with the building athletic director, counselors and school office to confirm both the residential and academic eligibility of each athlete
    • Distribute team rosters, contest schedules and contest locations to all players, school staff and parents/guardians
    • Monitor athlete class attendance, behavior and academic progress
    • Work with the building athletic director to establish set practice times and locations
    • Supervise and direct activities of any assistant coaches
    • Ensure quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written correspondence with the media
    • Work with the building athletic director to determine and procure any team awards
  • Training and Preparation of Athletes
    • Hold fair and equitable tryouts
    • Teach sports techniques, playing rules, strategies and playing tactics
    • Practice with clear objectives and goals including practice plans
    • Condition athletes appropriately for activities requiring endurance, strength and agility
    • Supervise and conduct practices and contests safely; supervise locker rooms and vehicles
    • Teach sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic and responsibility to one’s team
    • Respond to player injuries with approved first aid techniques
    • Model appropriate behavior and sportsmanship in and out of the athletic arena
    • Provide coverage for absent coaches
    • Provide positive motivation
    • Discipline players as necessary in accordance with team, school, district, league, section and OHSAA rues
    • Select, direct and monitor activities of any team managers
    • Confer with medical personnel for proper approval prior to allowing any injured player to return to an athletic activity
  • All DPS district head coaches are expected to abide by the coaches’ Code of Ethics as outline in DPS board policy. As a professional educator and leader, the head coach will:
    • Exemplify the highest moral character a role model for young people
    • Recognize the individual worth and reinforce the self-image of each team member
    • Encourage and assist team members to set personal goals to achieve their highest academic potential
    • Create a set of training rules for athletes which reflects the positive values of abstaining from the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco
    • Strive to develop the qualities of leadership, initiative and good judgment in each team member
    • Communicate and interpret program goals and objectives to parents and community
    • Provide a safe environment for practice and competition
    • Respect the integrity and judgment of the game officials
    • Be modest in victory and gracious in defeat

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Three or more years previous coaching experience at high school or college or higher level in the sport being coached.
  • Knowledge of overall operation of an athletic program
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION

  • Ohio teaching license is preferred.
  • Must pass a district background check
  • Possess valid CPR/First-Aid, Pupil Activity Permit, Fundamental of Coaching, Concussion in Sports Course certificates and Cardiac Arrest Course Certificate
  • All things being equal, hiring priority is given to DEA credentialed teachers
