This position performs the necessary duties to prepare and insure all buses and staff vehicles are ready for the following service day. Duties include but are not limited to cleaning, fueling, adding oil, anti-freeze, windshield wash fluid, washing exteriors, cleaning interiors, performing special cleaning needs to all buses and staff vehicles. Staff members performing this work complete associated paperwork as part of the regular nightly duties.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Operates a variety of public transit vehicles as needed to prepare and position the units for revenue service.
- Performs a variety of tasks to clean the interior of transit coaches, including cleaning seats, windows and handrails, vacuuming, sweeping, scrubbing and mopping floors, removing graffiti, cleaning and disinfecting bio-spills and other special cleaning needs.
- Sets up and operates automatic bus washers. Partially washes coaches by hand. Washes other WTA vehicles by hand.
- Refuels coaches, checks and adds fluids including oil, coolant, windshield wash fluid, etc.
- Performs maintenance on bus washers.
- Makes daily inspection of coaches to note and address special cleaning needs. May also note damage to the interior or exterior or defective equipment. Writes up defect order for repair of defective equipment and coordinates with maintenance staff.
- Occasionally makes minor repairs to coaches (e.g. loose or missing fasteners on handrails).
- Picks up articles left on coaches by passengers and gives items and information to Dispatch.
- Maintains cleanliness of bus yard and fuel island, including using chemical cleaners to soak up oil spots. Use hand and power equipment to wash and sweep fuel island and bus yard grounds, etc.
- Maintains daily service log, oil consumption records and other associated records. Routes recorded information to their proper destinations.
- Removes fare vaults at set intervals and replaces them with empty vaults. Maintains the security of fare vaults and loose fares throughout the fare drop process.
- Coordinates with Fleet Maintenance staff and Operations staff on fleet availability for scheduling of maintenance repairs and daily coach assignments.
- Works as a team member with other service section personnel, including route and facility maintenance staff.
- Participates in facilities maintenance and improvement projects.
- Participates in route maintenance, repair and improvement projects as assigned.
- May maintain and repair a variety of facility systems including plumbing, HVAC, bus washers, door openers, etc.
- Follows safety policies, procedures and guidelines. Maintains a safe, clean and orderly work area.
- Responsible for the proper labeling of all containers of paints and chemical products used.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Performs minor overhead door maintenance and repair.
- May perform vehicle graphics replacement work and aesthetic repairs, both interior and exterior, on coaches and vehicles.
- Sweeps and pressure washes concrete shelter pads and sidewalks at WTA facilities and bus stops.
- Cleans and disinfects bio-spills at shelters and WTA facilities.
- During winter removes snow and ice from sidewalks, bus stops, parking lots and driveways.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Participates in the training of other hostlers, other members of the service section and temporary employees in the section.
WORKING CONDITIONS, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:
- Duties performed are primarily outside in surrounding compound or in bus yard with exposure to all weather types and conditions. Types of tools typically used include hand and power tools, brooms, mops, ladders, and pressure washing equipment. Occasional use of snow removal tools, products and equipment. Employees performing Hostler work drive transit coaches typically on WTA property at the bus yard and sometimes on public streets.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
- Methods, tools and equipment used in custodial maintenance work.
- Methods, materials and tools related to the cleaning and servicing (oil, coolant and windshield wash fluid checks) of vehicles.
- Procedures for safely fueling vehicles.
Ability to:
- Safely operate transit vehicles in darkness and all weather conditions.
- Maneuver transit vehicles in tight and restricted spaces.
- Follow safe work practices.
- Operate fuel station cardlock and keypad systems.
- Read and interpret street maps, schedules, and procedural manuals.
- Read and understand MSDS sheets and labels on chemical product containers.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Write legibly on forms and other documents.
- Utilize computer equipment to input work order information and complete other basic computer functions.
- Work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization, outside agencies, and with the general public.
- Use a variety of hand and power tools and operate light equipment.
- Work a variety of shifts to include evenings, nights and weekends. Normal schedule allows two days off per week, yet the two days may not be consecutive.
- Manage time, priorities and work in pressure situations with multiple deadlines.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of janitorial or custodial maintenance experience are required.
- Minimum one year of education or experience in building systems maintenance and/or building construction is preferred.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
- Applicant must have an acceptable driving record and must submit a five-year driving abstract with the Employment Application.
- At time of Employment Application: possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license from the applicant’s state of residence. First day of employment: possession of a Class “B” (or “A”) Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake Endorsement and Passenger Endorsement from the State of Washington, OR a Washington State Instructional Permit for a Class “B” (or “A”) Commercial Driver’s License.
- Within sixteen weeks of hire: Pass WTA’s CDL training course and possess a Class “B” (or “A”) Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake Endorsement and Passenger Endorsement from the State of Washington.
- Employee must maintain a valid CDL with endorsements during length of employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Physically able to perform essential job functions including, but not limited to, communicating (verbal and written), stooping, bending, climbing (of bus steps), pushing/pulling, lifting and carrying of up to 60 lbs. (cleaning materials, paint, equipment, fare vaults).
MEDICAL PROTOCOL:
- Comply with CDL Core Exam and comply with the minimum requirements of Section 391.41 of the CDL Physical Standards.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- All offers of employment are contingent upon a physical exam to obtain CDL licensing and drug/alcohol screening. Participation in the WTA’s Fit for Work program, including random drug and alcohol testing, is a condition of hire and a requirement of employment. This position is classified as safety sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
COMPENSATION:
- $19.84 per hour starting wage and excellent benefit package.
- Full Wage range: $19.84 to $24.79
